The Coton de Tulear also known as "The Royal Dog of Madagascar" traces its history to the port city of Tulear a city on the south west coast of Madagascar. Coton is French for cotton which describes the profuse, soft, fine and sometimes slightly wavy coat which gives the breed its name. Although the standard calls for the Coton to be white a range of colours does exist in the breed most often mutating to white in the adult dog. The Coton is eager, alert and intelligent. A day with a Coton is a day full of smiles as their bounding joyful temperament makes them inclined to be a bit of a clown. They are an ideal apartment dog due to their small size.
