AKA:
Breed Group: Hound Group Height Male: 27 to 29 inches (68.58-73.66cm)
Breed Size: Medium Height Female: 27 to 29 inches (68.58-73.66cm)
Breed Origin: Afghanistan Weight: 58-64lb (26-34kg.)
Appearance
The Afghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance one of dignity and aloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. He has a straight front, proudly carried head, eyes gazing into the distance as if in memory of ages past. The striking characteristics of the breed - exotic, or "Eastern," expression, long silky topknot, peculiar coat pattern, very prominent hipbones, large feet, and the impression of a somewhat exaggerated bend in the stifle due to profuse trouserings - stand out clearly, giving the Afghan Hound the appearance of what he is, a king of dogs, that has held true to tradition throughout the ages.

Temperament
The Afghan Hound is a lively and active creature with a very individual personality. You will find that some Afghan Hounds can be quite boisterous whereas others tend to be more reserved. These dogs are usually determined and quite independent - however, this is not a breed that likes to be left alone for long periods, and if neglected can become bored and destructive. Some Afghans have a tendency to become withdrawn without proper socialization, and therefore you should ensure that he is socialized at an early age. The Afghan Hound is best suited to those with some experience of dog ownership and training, as their stubborn streak can make training quite a challenge. Housebreaking can also be a challenge with this breed.

Amenable to training and discipline, they can be disobedient if an owner does not give the dog clear guidelines as to what is expected of them and are consistent with it. This breed can be difficult to housebreak. Can be timid and high strung if they do not receive enough mental and physical exercise.

History
This is a very elegant, ancient dog, native to Sinai, and mentioned several times in Egyptian papyruses as well as pictured in the caves of northern Afghanistan more than 4000 years ago. The breed was kept pure for centuries, and its exportation was always prohibited. It therefore only reached Europe as contraband early in this century. An extremely fast and agile runner, the Afghan is a sighthound, which means it hunts by sight. It was used as a shepherd and as a hunter of many types of game including deer, wild goats, snow leopards and wolves. They were also used by shepherds as herders and watchdogs.
